Grants For Exchange Students
Exchange student programs are certainly exciting, but they come with a fair amount of financial burden that must be overcome. Thankfully, there are some grants available to young people who are interested in becoming exchange students. This is true of American students who want to travel abroad or foreign students who want to study in the US.
The Fulbright Grant
The Fulbright program focuses upon providing funding to students who are interested in traveling abroad for study-related reasons. These grants are not funded by a single organization; the Fulbright program is a collection of private, educational and Federal agencies who all donate funds for a common cause. These grants are available to American students who want to become foreign exchange students and who can provide proof of financial need. The program focuses upon educations in science and technology, so students who are applying for a Fulbright grant must be studying in one of these fields and must also be currently attending school in a participating Fulbright country.
Boren Scholarships and Fellowships
Among some of the most prestigious scholarships that will allow American students to study abroad are the Boren Scholarships and Fellowships. These scholarships are only for undergraduate students and can award up to $20,000 for the scholarships and $30,000 for the fellowships; those who are awarded fellowships must agree to work for the Federal government for at least one year post-graduation. The primary goal of the scholarships is to allow students to learn more about the cultures in countries that are directly affect the US, including the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Central and Eastern Europe and Central America.
Fund for Education Abroad Scholarships
The Fund for Education Abroad scholarships are awarded to students who express interest in travelling abroad to broaden their academic horizons. Rather than a single scholarship, the Fund for Education Abroad foundation is a collection of several scholarships from private donors. Students who qualify can earn up to $5,000 for a single semester or $10,000 for an entire academic year. Some of the requirements include US citizenship, current enrollment in an US-based college or university as an undergraduate, a minimum of four weeks’ worth of study in the host country and the ability to demonstrate financial need and academic prowess.

Randolph College Grant
The Randolph College Grant is provided to students who are willing to study abroad at Randolph College, located in Great Britain. The amount of the grant is up to $17,000 per year, and it is a combination of need-based grants and monetary recognition for academic achievements. Students who want to apply for this grant are required to fill out a FAFSA, which is the same application used to determine a student’s eligibility for Federal loans when they attend schools in the United States. The college focuses upon the arts and is sure to provide American students with experiences unlike anything else in the world.
Students who are interested in becoming exchange students but who may be unable to take on the financial burden are welcome to apply for any of these grants and scholarships. Students and their parents or guardians should also remember that most grants can be used in combination with one another for even more financial assistance.
